The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) will be commemorated on December 3, 2024, under the theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.” This global observance highlights the essential role of persons with disabilities in shaping a more inclusive and sustainable world and calls for their active participation in decision-making processes.

The theme aligns with critical global milestones, including the Pact for the Future and the upcoming Second World Summit for Social Development in 2025, reinforcing efforts to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It also underscores the leadership of persons with disabilities in driving transformative change and promoting disability-inclusive peace and development at all levels.

The IDPD 2024 will feature a hybrid commemorative event at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The opening segment, scheduled from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, will provide a policy overview of advancements in the global disability agenda and highlight upcoming milestones. This will be followed by a virtual panel discussion from 11:30 AM to 1:15 PM, featuring experts, advocates, and leaders from the disability rights movement.

Key objectives of this year’s observance include promoting leadership, enhancing inclusion, increasing decision-making participation, and celebrating achievements of persons with disabilities. The event will also reflect on challenges and identify opportunities to accelerate progress towards a more inclusive society.

The global disability community is encouraged to join the conversation online using hashtags such as #DisabilityDay, #IDPD, and #EveryoneIncluded. Updates and insights can be followed on social media platforms like Twitter (@UN_Enable) and Facebook (@undesasocial). This year’s IDPD serves as a vital platform to champion the leadership of persons with disabilities, reaffirming the collective commitment to a future where no one is left behind.
