GA71 side-event: The CRPD turns 10

21 October 2016

GA71 side-event: The CRPD turns 10On Wednesday 26 October 2016 from 3 to 4.30 p.m., a side-event titled "The CRPD turns 10: How can we move towards a full realization of the purpose and objectives of the Convention?" will be held in Conference Room 12 at UN Headquarters in New York. The side event is co-organized by the Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities together with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, in cooperation with International Disability Alliance (IDA) and co-sponsored by UNDESA and the Government of Finland.

The UN human rights and other international experts will take stock, from the perspective of their respective mandates, of the progress made to-date and expand on what needs to be done next to overcome challenges in relation to the implementation of the Convention.

Under the current realities, many persons with disabilities continue to face aggravated forms of discrimination, in particular women with disabilities, persons with psychosocial disabilities and persons with albinism, who have been historically and contemporarily left behind and subjected to atrocious human rights violations. It is crucial, therefore, to take stock of where we are today in the realization of the general principles and actions laid out in the Convention but also to gaze ahead and think critically on how to address the remaining challenges.

Download invitation and read the concept note.
