Welcome to the United Nations
The review and appraisal of the Madrid Plan of Action takes place every five years. Member States decided to utilize a unique process of review which involves a participatory “bottom-up” element involving civil society and older persons themselves.
The process is designed to assist Member States in receiving feedback on the policies and programmes they have implemented. Member States are encouraged to utilize this process along with traditional reporting methodologies utilizing quantitative data and evaluation.
Following the review and appraisal at the national level, a regional level consolidation of information takes place, coordinated by the United Nations Regional Commissions: ECA, ECE, ECLAC, ESCWA and ESCAP. In 2007, the Regional Commissions organized regional level conferences and events to discuss the results of national reviews and appraisals.
The first review and appraisal was concluded in 2008 with a global review at the Commission for Social Development. The second review and appraisal process started in 2011 and will involve regional reviews in 2012 and a global review in 2013 at the Commission for Social Development.
