Anne Nuorgam (Finland), Chair of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues at its twentieth session, presented its report, highlighting recommendations made during its session, held from 19 April to 30 April 2021 on the theme “Peace, justice and strong institutions: The role of indigenous peoples in implementing Sustainable Development Goal 16”.

Discussions during the twentieth session reiterated that access to justice for Indigenous Peoples – through mechanisms that do not violate or threaten their rights – is essential and that states must recognize that Indigenous Peoples’ own justice systems are pivotal to ensure their rights to maintain their autonomy, culture, and traditions. The report also highlights the importance of peace and security and that the Forum is committed to facilitating a process among Indigenous Peoples and Member States with the aim of rethinking and supporting international efforts to ensure peace and security and create peacebuilding processes which also guarantee the effective participation of Indigenous Peoples.

The Council then adopted draft decisions on: “Venue and dates for the twenty-first session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues”; holding an international expert group meeting on the theme for the twenty-first session: “Indigenous peoples, business, autonomy and the human rights principles of due diligence including free, prior and informed consent”; and “Report of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues on its twentieth session and provisional agenda for its twenty-first session”.
