Indigenous Peoples’ Autonomies and Self-Governance: Regional Dialogue for the Pacific

On Monday 14 February, the Permanent Forum will organize a regional dialogue on Indigenous Peoples’ autonomy and self-governance in the Pacific supported by the Indigenous Peoples and Development Branch, Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

The webinar will take place at 8pm (New York) and 3pm (Hawaii) / on Tuesday 15 February at 9am (Perth), 11am (Port Moresby), 12 noon (Sydney), 2pm (Auckland).

Dr Hannah McGlade, PFII Member will lead the discussion, with Dr Claire Charters (New Zealand) and Professor Megan Davis (Australia) moderating. The following experts will join the moderators in a roundtable discussion:

Emannuel Peni (Papua New Guinea)

Pu’uhonua D. B. K. Kanahele (Hawai’i, USA)

Matthew Tukaki (New Zealand)

Prof. Margaret Mutu (New Zealand)

At its twentieth session, the Permanent Forum committed to facilitating informal online regional dialogues on autonomy and self-governance to support the development of guiding principles for the realization of the rights of Indigenous Peoples to autonomy and self-government.  Guiding questions for consideration of speakers and participants are:

  • What are some good practices related to Indigenous Peoples’ autonomy in the region?
  • What have been the challenges or obstacles to implement the right to autonomy?
  • What could be the potential scope and content of guiding principles for the implementation of Indigenous Peoples’ rights to autonomy and self-government?

Participation will be open to representatives of Indigenous Peoples’ organizations, Member States, UN entities, academia and NGOs, applying the same criteria for participation that is used for the annual sessions of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.
