UN Secretary-General raises indigenous issues during visit to Peru

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (left) meets with Ollanta Humala (right), President of Peru, in Lima. 12 December 2014. UN Photo/Mark Garten The United Nations Secretary-General was in Peru on 8 and 9 October to attend the annual meeting of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund.

While in the country, the Secretary-General met with the agencies, funds and programmes of the United Nations system in Peru to discuss the work of the UN related to Indigenous Peoples.

At a press encounter with President Ollanta Humala Tasso, the Secretary-General praised Peru for the measures taken to advance Indigenous Peoples’ rights and also “expressed concern about the loss of life during recent protests related to extractive activities”. He urged the Government to address social demands in compliance with international human rights standards.
