The report of the 21^st session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (2022) was presented by the Chair of the Forum to the Economic and Social Council Management Meeting on 22 July 2022.

The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2022 provides a global overview of progress on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, using the latest available data and estimates. It tracks the global and regional progress towards the 17 Goals with in-depth analyses of selected indicators for each Goal.

On 12 July 2022, in a communication issued by the President of the Economic and Social Council, H.E. Collen Vixen Kelapile announced the appointment of eight members, nominated by indigenous peoples’ organizations to the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues for a 3-year term beginning 1 January 2023 and concluding on 31 December 2025 in accordance with ECOSOC resolution 2000/22. The Council will take note of these appointments at the ECOSOC Management Segment session on 21-22 July.

On 23 December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly decided, in its resolution 49/214, that the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People shall be observed on 9 August every year. The date marks the first meeting, in 1982, of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations.

The International Day observance will take place online on Tuesday, 9 August 2022 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am Eastern Standard Time (EST).

To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the world needs to leverage the full potential of all generations. Solidarity across generations is key for sustainable development.

In its resolution 72/233, the General Assembly proclaimed the Third United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (2018–2027). It also considered that the theme of the Third Decade, to be reviewed at its seventy-third sessions, should be “Accelerating global actions for a world without poverty”, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The meeting of the HLPF in 2022 will be held from Tuesday, 5 July, to Thursday, 7 July, and from Monday, 11 July, to Friday, 15 July 2022 , under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council. This includes the three-day ministerial segment of the forum from Wednesday, 13 July, to Friday, 15 July 2022.

This virtual event takes place on the margins of the 2022 HLPF, held under the auspices of ECOSOC. The theme of the HLPF in 2022 is Building back better from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) while advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. As Member States discuss sustainable and resilient measures to building an inclusive and effective path for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda, this side event will specifically address SDG 5 on Gender Equality.
