UN SG’s Report on Cooperatives in Social Development 2015

The UN Secretary-General’s Report on Cooperatives in Social Development (A/70/61) of 2015 was prepared by the Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) in the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA). It highlights the essence of the cooperative model in the context of the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is the first SG Report on Cooperatives dedicated to the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.

AARP, the United Nations Focal Point on Ageing and the United Nations Women for Peace Association are holding a two-day luncheon briefing on “Women’s Empowerment: the forgotten half-billion” in conjunction with the sixtieth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW60).

On 25 September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted “Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, which came into effect on 1 January 2016 and will carry through the next 15 years.

The theme for the 2016 International Day of Cooperatives (IDC) is ‘Cooperatives: The power to act for a sustainable future’.

As part of its 2016 activities for the International Day of Cooperatives (IDC), COPAC is hosting a photo exhibition at United Nations Headquarters in New York City from 4-20 July 2016, during the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. Photos selected for the exhibition will be viewed by the many visitors to the UN during this important political event, and be included in an exhibition book distributed to key cooperative stakeholders.

Sri Lanka ratified the Convention on 8 February 2016, bringing the total number of States Parties to the CRPD to 162.

Working towards universal ratification and implementation of the CRPD:

On Thursday, 21 April 2016 at United Nations Headquarters in New York, the President of the UN General Assembly H.E. Mogens Lykketoft will convene a High-level Thematic Debate on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to support prompt and inclusive implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Nominations to the UNPFII 2017-19

The ECOSOC Youth forum, 1-2 February 2016, will discuss ways in which young people can play an active role in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It will also address how the youth can best communicate on the Agenda, bringing on board the innovative use of social media and communication tools.
