Ageing for All Ages: the 2023 Silver Economy Forum

UN DESA in collaboration with the Mission of Japan and the Global Coalition on Ageing, organized the 2023 Silver Economy Forum “Advancing the SDGs in the Decade of Healthy Ageing.” The event was held on 6 and 7 December 2023. The Forum aimed at providing an opportunity to critically discuss actionable programmes and policies that impact global healthy ageing, with the SDGs and the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing as the foundation for the ideas presented.

In the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, sport is recognized as an important enabler of sustainable development. Sports, the arts and physical activity have the power to change perceptions, prejudices and behaviours, as well as to inspire people, break down racial and political barriers, combat discrimination and defuse conflict.

Basketball impacts global spheres of commerce, peace and diplomacy, and creates a unique space of cooperation, physical movement and an interdependence that allows participants to see each other as human beings first and foremost.

New Report of the Secretary General on the thirtieth anniversary of the International Year of the Family

As part of the preparations for the thirtieth anniversary of the International Year of the Family, the report focuses on analysis of demographic trends and their impact on families and family-oriented policies. With regard to fertility decisions and maternal mortality reduction, the Secretary-General recommends provision of quality education, ensuring access to reproductive health services and family planning and investment in health-care facilities in remote areas.

2023 International Day Of Persons With Disabilities - IDPD

The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

UNPFII Chairperson addressed CBD Art 8J meeting, 13 November 2023, Geneva, Switzerland

The 12th meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Inter-sessional Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity took place from 12 to 16 November 2023.  

On 13 November, the Chairperson of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, Mr. Dario Mejia Montalvo, addressed the Working Group that considered the recommendations related to the Convention from the twentieth (2021), twenty-first (2022), and twenty-second (2023) sessions of the Permanent Forum, focusing on those recommendations that had not yet been examined by the Working Group.  

GA Third Committee took up the resolution “The Rights Of Indigenous Peoples”

On 7 November 2023, the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (Third Committee) of the 78th session of the General Assembly discussed and took up the draft resolution "The Rights of Indigenous Peoples" [item 68 (a)].
