New World Social Report calls for concrete measures to support an ageing world

Reaping benefits of population ageing begins with promoting equal opportunities from birth

The number of people aged 65 years or older worldwide is projected to more than double, rising from 761 million in 2021 to 1.6 billion in 2050. As the world continues to address multiple crises, including the rising cost of living, the rights and well being of older persons must be at the centre of collective efforts to achieve a sustainable future, according to the World Social Report 2023, released today.

High-level event to launch the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, UN Headquarters, New York

On 16 December 2022, the President of the 77th session of the General Assembly, Csaba KŐRÖSI, convened a high-level event to launch of the 2022-2032 International Decade of Indigenous Languages in New York, in line with the 2022 General Assembly resolution 75/168

The high-level event took place at the GA Hall at the United Nations Headquarters.

61st Session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD61)

The 61st United Nations Commission for Social Development (CSocD61) will take place from 6 to 15 February 2023 in conference room 4 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The priority theme this year will focus on “Creating full and productive employment and decent work for all as a way of overcoming inequalities to accelerate the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.

The CSocD61 will review relevant United Nations plans and programmes of action pertaining to the situation of social groups:

COVID-19 laid bare barriers faced by 1 billion persons with disabilities

Marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, said on Friday that those with a disability were among the hardest hit by the pandemic.

COVID-19 has laid bare the persistent barriers and inequalities faced by the world’s one billion persons with disabilities”, he said.
